What is respite care?

Relief for the family caregivers doing everything

Family caregivers burn out. Spouses, adult children, and siblings who provide daily care for a loved one carry an enormous physical and emotional load. Respite care gives them a break — a few hours, a full day, or an overnight — while a trained Joy Bridge Care caregiver steps in and continues care.

Respite care uses the same personal care, daily living support, and companionship services we provide for all clients. The difference is the arrangement: you schedule care specifically so you can step away and recover.

What we do not provide

  • No skilled nursing care or clinical assessments
  • No medication administration — verbal reminders only
  • No wound care, catheter care, or medical procedures
  • No physical, occupational, or speech therapy

Respite care through Joy Bridge Care covers non-medical support only. If your loved one requires skilled nursing care during a respite period, you will need to coordinate with a licensed home health agency for those clinical services.

Why it matters

Rest is what makes caregiving sustainable

Studies consistently show that family caregivers — spouses, adult children, siblings — experience higher rates of depression and physical illness than non-caregivers. Caregiver burnout is not a personal failure. It is a predictable consequence of doing too much for too long without support.

Rest is not selfish. It is what makes long-term caregiving at home possible at all. Respite care is one of the most practical things a family can do to sustain a care arrangement without putting everyone involved at risk.

Respite can be scheduled or last-minute. If you need a few hours this week while you take care of something important, call us. We will do our best to accommodate the timing, and we will always send a caregiver your loved one has already met when possible.

Frequently asked questions

Respite care questions answered

What is respite care?

Respite care is temporary, short-term in-home care provided so family caregivers — spouses, adult children, siblings — can take a break. A trained Joy Bridge Care caregiver steps in for a few hours, a full day, or an overnight while you rest, travel, handle work, or take care of something important.

How long can respite care last?

Respite care can be a few hours, a full day, several days, or longer depending on the family's needs. We can accommodate scheduled respite as well as last-minute requests when possible.

Is respite care covered by insurance in Georgia?

Many long-term care insurance policies cover respite care. Georgia's SOURCE and CCSP Medicaid waiver programs may also fund respite care for eligible individuals. Contact us or your case manager to review your options.

Why do family caregivers need respite care?

Studies consistently show that family caregivers experience higher rates of depression and physical illness than non-caregivers. Burnout is real. Respite care is not a luxury — it is what makes long-term caregiving at home sustainable without putting everyone involved at risk.

Will my loved one see a familiar caregiver during respite?

We make every effort to send a caregiver your loved one has already met. Every client has a primary caregiver and a trained backup from day one, so respite care can often use someone already known to the family.
